Does China have an e-visa? What the online visa application system does

The official passages cited here describe online application, online review and status tracking, and they do not use the term e-visa; the embassy or consulate handling your application states whether you must hand in your passport.

The official passages cited below describe an online application system for Chinese visas. They use the terms online application, online review and status tracking. The term "e-visa" does not appear in the China Consular Services portal text, in the US Embassy overview or step III, in the India Embassy notice, or in section I of the Visa Application Instructions. Whether you must hand in your passport is stated by the embassy or consulate that handles your application.

What the official portal offers

The China Consular Services portal page says: "The official portal provides comprehensive online support for the entire Chinese visa application process." The portal address printed in the text is consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA/.

According to the portal text, the portal:

  • gives access to the detailed Guidance on Visa Application;
  • lets you start a new application or continue a saved draft;
  • lets you track the status of your application;
  • lets you manage later appointments, such as interview bookings.

Basic documents in section I

Section I, Basic Documents, of the Visa Application Instructions published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that, as required by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in your locality, you should fill in the visa application form online and submit the applicant's passport and photo, proof of legal stay or residence, and the previous Chinese passport or previous Chinese visa.

Section I says that the specific requirements are in the Guidance on Visa Application section of the China Online Visa Application System, or on the website of the embassy or consulate in your locality. Section I then sets out further basic documents in its own list. Read that list in the publication before you apply.

Section I does not say where or how the passport is submitted. The embassy or consulate handling your application sets that out.

United States Embassy guidelines

The Embassy of the PRC in the United States published guidelines dated 22 September 2025, as titled. They are addressed to applicants within the jurisdiction of the Embassy. The overview says that applicants can use the system to fill out forms, upload materials for online preliminary review and track the status of the application.

The overview says the application consists of 3 main steps:

I. Signing up and logging into your account II. Filling out the form and uploading materials III. Going through online review and submitting your passport to the Embassy

Step III says that after submission, the application enters the online preliminary review stage, where the staff of the Embassy conduct the online review. If the application does not meet the requirements or needs more materials, consular staff will reject it, and the status will change to "Rejected and to be modified."

After the preliminary review is approved, the status displays as "Passport to be submitted." Step III then says the applicant or agent should visit the Visa office of the Embassy to submit the passport, a printed copy of the application information page with the barcode, and "certain original documents requiring submitted on-site."

Step III also says: "Online review approval does not guarantee visa issuance. Consular officers may require an in-person interview with the applicant or request additional documentation."

India Embassy notice

The Embassy of the PRC in India published a notice in December 2025. It says: "Chinese Online Visa Application System will be officially launched by the Chinese Embassy in India on December 22, 2025." It says applicants could enjoy convenience of filling out the form and uploading application materials online at the website named in the notice, which is visaforchina.cn/DEL3_EN/qianzhengyewu.

The notice does not set out a passport step.

So, is there an e-visa?

The term e-visa is not used in these passages. What they describe is an online application, online review and status tracking. The issuance wording quoted above is the US Embassy's statement that online review approval does not guarantee visa issuance.

Whether a passport must be handed in is stated by the embassy or consulate handling your application. In the US Embassy's guidelines, step III says the passport is submitted at the Visa office.

As a suggestion, not a rule, start by reading the Guidance on Visa Application on the portal. Then check the website of the embassy or consulate that handles your application for its passport and document steps. Confirm the launch date and the current notice on the official page before you travel.
