What you may do in China on visa-free entry: the purposes the waiver covers

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs FAQ and a National Immigration Administration note name the purposes covered by visa-free entry to China, and each of those two passages sets a 30-day stay limit.

Visa-free entry to mainland China covers a fixed set of purposes, and two official texts name them. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs FAQ names sports competitions, conferences and exhibitions, and study tours (summer/winter camps). The National Immigration Administration note names business, tourism, visits to relatives and friends, exchange visits, and transit. Each of those two passages sets a stay limit of 30 days, and the rules below quote each one separately.

Purposes named in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs FAQ

The FAQ answer on sports competitions, conferences and exhibitions, and study tours reads:

Visa waiver applies to those who come to China for the purpose of sports competitions, conferences and exhibitions, and study tours (summer/winter camps), and stay in China for no more than 30 days. However, a valid ordinary passport is needed.

The FAQ answer on examination at the border names a second group of purposes:

Foreign nationals traveling for the purpose of business, tourism, family or friends visit, exchange and transit that meet the visa waiver requirements can be allowed to enter China without a visa upon examination and approval in accordance with law by border inspection authorities.

That answer sets no stay limit. The "meet the visa waiver requirements" wording is the only condition it states.

Purposes named in the National Immigration Administration note

The note covers nationals of the countries on the National Immigration Administration list who hold ordinary passports. It says:

Nationals of the above countries holding ordinary passports may enter China visa-free for business, tourism, visits to relatives and friends, exchange visits, or transit, for stays of up to 30 days. The duration of stay is calculated from 00:00 on the day following the date of entry.

The list of countries is dated 17 February 2026 on the official page. It was checked on 11 October 2026. Confirm the countries on the official page before you travel, because the list can change.

The purposes from the two sources side by side:

Purpose named Source Stay limit in that passage
Sports competitions, conferences and exhibitions, study tours (summer/winter camps) FAQ answer on sports, conferences and study tours No more than 30 days
Business, tourism, family or friends visit, exchange, transit FAQ answer on examination at the border Not set in that answer
Business, tourism, visits to relatives and friends, exchange visits, transit National Immigration Administration note Up to 30 days

Purposes the FAQ answers exclude

The FAQ answer on examination at the border states:

Visa waiver does not apply to those who come to China for work, study, news coverage or purposes alike.

The same FAQ answer set treats study tours as a covered purpose, and it names study among the purposes the waiver does not apply to. For work, study or news coverage, the visa classes page sets out which visa class matches the purpose.

How the purpose is checked

The FAQ answer on examination at the border says that border inspection decides entry:

Entry into China shall be denied by border inspection authorities in accordance with law for foreign nationals who travel for purposes that do not meet the visa waiver requirements or who are not allowed to enter China in accordance with laws and regulations.

The same answer says:

It is recommended to take documents such as invitation letters, air tickets and reservations of accommodation as a proof corresponding to the purposes of entry into China.

The word "recommended" marks this as advice from the FAQ, not a requirement. The FAQ answer on sports competitions, conferences and exhibitions, and study tours says a valid ordinary passport is needed.

Border inspection decides entry at the port. This site cannot say whether entry will be allowed in a given case.

Staying within your purpose

Article 37 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law reads:

Foreigners who stay or reside in China shall not engage in activities not corresponding to the purpose of stay or residence, and shall leave China prior to the expiry of the prescribed duration of stay or residence.

The FAQ answer on multiple entries says that foreign nationals eligible for the visa waiver can enter China without a visa more than once. It adds:

Currently, there is no restriction on the number of entries or total days of stay, but those who enjoy visa-free travel to China shall not engage in activities inconsistent with their purpose of entry.

The FAQ was checked on 10 October 2026, and the word "currently" refers to that date.
